These
are some of the most-asked HeXen II questions, that have been answered at least
a million times, but they still keep getting asked. So, in an effort to cut
down on 'newbie redundancy', we're offering this HeXen II QuickFAQ. Thanks to
Squidy for his help in compiling these questions and answers. Enjoy!
Q. The winner for most asked question is....
I'm trying to run GLHeXen II and am receiving the error" can not find a
required file "glide2x.dll"
A. This is definitely my most answered question
for HeXen II and HeXenWorld. Often I end up answering it several times a
week.. And the answer is, there is a file in your HeXen II folder(usually c:\HeXen
II) named "opengl32.dll. Delete this file or move some where else. This file is
specifically for 3DFX (Voodoo) video cards and if you don't have one of those
you'll get that message.
*Important* There should be a file with the same name in your Windows\system folder.
LEAVE THIS ONE ALONE!
Q.
I'm running GLHeXen II and want to change the resolution. How do I do this?
A. To change resolutions in HeXen II or HeXenWorld
you must load your desired resolution on the command line, such as; glh2.exe -width
800
you can also specify the height as in -height 600 or color depth as in -bpp 16
or use them together as in;
GLH2.exe -width 800 -bpp 16
*note* With voodoo 3s this doesn't always work right; go to 3dfx's website, find the updated minigl drivers
for your card and this should fix it.
Q.
How
do I add mouse looking to HeXen II or HeXenWorld?
A. To add mouse looking in HeXen II or HeXenWorld
type in at the console +mlook, only bad thing with that is you have to do it every
time you play. To make it permanent, open the file autoexec.cfg in your HeXen
II\ data1 folder with windows notepad and add the line +mlook and then save it.
If there's not a file with that name use notepad to make one and add that line
and save it. If you have a file with that name in your HeXenWorld folder, you
can add +mlook there too.
Q.
I
start GlHeXen II or HeXenWorld and it crashes with various error messages. What's
wrong?
A. This one is the hardest HeXen II related question
I've run into and you can try several things to try and fix it.
-First, try setting windows desktop resolution to the same one that your using
for HeXen II. The default for GLHeXen II is 640 by 480 with 16 bit color. Try
setting your windows desktop to that first. You do this by right clicking on the
desktop then click on the tab marked "properties", then click on the on marked
"settings". Here you can change what resolution that windows is using. You might
also have to reboot your computer at this time.
-Second, try updating your cards video drivers by connecting to the manufacturers
web site and checking their tech support.
Q.
I've deleted opengl32.dll and the game starts, but runs very very slow. Why is
this?
A. This is due to your computer using Microsoft's
software opengl for rendering HeXen II and it means that either your video card
or it's drivers don't fully support the Opengl api. Can't do anything about the
card except get a new card, but you can update the drivers from your card's manufacturer's
web site.
* I had this problem with a Riva TNT, until upgrading it's drivers.
Q. I want to play HeXen II or HeXenWorld online
and can't find any games. How do I find them?
A. There are several game finding utilities available
on the net, the most popular being Gamespy
, Pingtool., and even Kali. Most recently, Qtracker
also supports HeXenWorld and keeps updated with our master servers.
Q.
When
I play HeXen II, I seem to drift even if I'm not pressing any key, how can I fix
this?
A. This is usually due to joystick problems. If
you use a joystick, try to recalibrate it. If you don't, type in joystick"0" in
the console. If neither work, try disconnecting your joystick from your computer.
Q. When I play GlHeXen II all the models
look really distorted and jagged, how can I fix this?
A. To fix this, you must delete all the subfolders
in your HeXen II folder named "glhexen" When you restart the game it will 'remesh'
the models, and hopefully correct this problem.
Q. When I play GlHeXenWorld or Siege,
there are ugly white textures in places like doors, can I fix this?
A. Try adding the line "gl_texsort 1" (without
the quotes) to your autoexec.cfg in your HW and Siege folders.
Q.
You keep talking about new drivers, where can I find them?
A. Here's a popular link to find drivers: http://www.windrivers.com/.
Q. What is HeXenWorld?
A. HeXenWorld is an internet muliplayer optimized
version of HeXen II . You can get all the files you need for it here.
Q. How can I find such and such item in the
single player version of HeXen II?
A. Use our walkthrough here.
Q. I have a warez version of HeXen II, how
can I make it work?
A. Why try and get a buggy, not to mention, illegal
warez version of this great game to work, when find the legal version of the game
for around $5. So, what the heck, buy it!
Q.
I'm
using a firewall/router and can't connect to HeXenWorld. How can I do this.
A. You must set whatever router or firewall you're
using to allow UDP and TCP packets through on the port HeXenWorld uses; typically,
this is 26950.
